Vine was founded in June 2012 and acquired by Twitter TWTR a few months later for a reported $30 million.

It is designed in a way for people to film short clips that can be linked together for a total of six seconds. Each short video plays in a continuous loop, and are viewable directly in Twitter's timeline or embedded into a Web page.

Those who post videos are known as Viners, consisting of up-and-coming comedians, actors, musicians and sometimes just the person next door with a little too much time on his or her hands.

Viners will do almost anything such as play joke, dress up, and even work with other Viners in order to gain more views. It is also used by journalists and as a promotional tool for companies. Just a few months after its launch, Vine became the most-used video sharing application in the market.

Alx James, 5.9 Million Followers

James is from Black Creek, North Carolina and at one stage was a volleyball star. He was even asked to join the Junior Olympic team. He then decided that he wanted to be an entertainer and made it through two rounds of "American Idol."

A friend suggested Vine to him and now he says it has opened up countless opportunities in the entertainment business.

Jerome Jarre, 6.9 Million Followers

Jarre is a 23-year-old Frenchman who does several bold things on the channel such as surprising, complimenting and even kissing strangers. He is the co –founder of a marketing agency and production house, Grape Story, and sees Vine as a tool to fulfill his ambitions and reach out to the world.

He recently created a Vine clip featuring Robert De Niro.

Brittany Furlan, 7 Million Followers

Furlan is an American actress, costume designer and comedienne, best known for her Vine popularity. She was named one of the best Viners by MTV in December 2013.

KingBach, 7.8 Million Followers

His real name is Andrew Bachelor and though was born in Toronto, Canada, he grew up in Florida, where he was one of the best high jumpers in the NCAA. Almost all of his videos will at least make you smile and he is many people’s favorite Viner. Some of his most popular Vines include those in which he makes fun of his buddies.

Nash Grier, 9.2 Million Followers

This 15-year-old has became famous for his use of humor and song parodies. He also collaborates with his friends and family when he can and has been on numerous TV shows, such as "Good Day America" and "Good Day New York."
