The Internet Of Things Complicates Cybersecurity Efforts

The popularity of interconnected devices that automate everything from cars to household appliances is quickly rising, but with that comes a new threat of hacking attacks that penetrate one gadget, but gain information from any connected device. A recent report from Symantec showed that an cybercrime is rising at an alarming rate and security professionals are having a hard time keeping up. New Threats Now that people are beginning to automate many different parts of their lives, antivirus protection is becoming increasingly important. However, it's no longer enough to install and run an antivirus program on your laptop and cybersecurity firms are rushing to fill that gap. New Offerings Popular computer antivirus company AVG Technologies NV AVG is beginning to shift its focus to mobile devices and other connected gadgets. The company offers protection for cell phones and has pledged to find new ways to keep consumers' data safe in the cloud. BitDefender recently released a new device designed to protect a customer's entire home. Called "Box", the device attaches to the user's wifi router, monitors the data coming in an out and detects suspicious activity. However, Box carries a hefty price tag— it costs $200 dollars including the first year of service; after that consumers pay $100 per year for protection. A New Market As more and more devices join the internet of things, most expect cybersecurity companies to step up their offerings to include more comprehensive packages. While laptop security remains paramount among most average consumers, antivirus software for mobile devices is quickly gaining momentum and the demand for security software for home and car based devices is expected to follow suit.
