Following the announcement Wednesday by Ambarella Inc AMBA that the company has acquired VisLab S.r.l. for $30 million in cash, Stifel analyst Kevin Cassidy released a report breaking down the acquisition and discussing exactly what Ambarella stands to gain from the move.
Overall, Cassidy believes that the acquisition is bullish for Ambarella and a big positive for its shareholders.
About VisLab
VisLab is the privately-held Italian Vision and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the University of Parma. VisLab specializes in perception systems and is a pioneer in autonomous vehicle research.
VisLab develops computer vision and intelligent control systems both within the automotive realm and for outside applications. The lab made headlines in 2010 when its autonomous vehicle driving system “Porter” completed a 13,000 km autonomous trip from Italy to China.
What Does Ambarella Gain?
According to Cassidy, the move to acquire VisLab is a step in the right direction for Ambarella when it comes to developing ways to enhance the intelligence of video cameras.
“We view the addition of analytics as increasing the value of Ambarella’s video processors,” Cassidy explained in the report, adding that VisLab’s 27 researchers will be working together with Ambarella’s computer vision development team.
“This will enable extensive and robust computer vision support in future Ambarella solutions targeting Ambarella’s core markets including automotive, IP security, wearable, and airborne cameras,” Cassidy wrote.
Outlook
Cassidy believes that Ambarella will continue to explore M&A as a means to enhance its product offerings. Following the VisLab deal, Stifel has a Buy rating on Ambarella and a $115 target for the stock.
