The Former Hewlett-Packard Highlights Short Earnings Week

  • Earnings from the Hewlett-Packard spin-offs highlight the holiday-shortened week.
  • Expectations are low for Deere on the top and bottom lines.
  • Earnings are seen doubling from at least two others reported this week.
While many investors and analysts will be focused on the Thanksgiving holiday this week, the two parts of the Hewlett-Packard split-up will make their first solo appearances in the earnings spotlight. Wall Street analysts expect HP Inc HPQ, the printer and PC focused company, to show big drops on the top and bottom lines in its report. Numbers from Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co HPE, the enterprise-focused concern, are forecast to be a little better than those of its former stablemate. Expectations are low as well for the latest results from giant agricultural and construction equipment maker Deere & Company DE. Yet some "holiday cheer" is expected. The consensus forecasts have earnings doubling at tech companies Palo Alto Networks Inc PANW and Trina Solar Limited TSL, relative to the year-ago periods. Below is a quick look at what is expected from these and a peek at some of the week's other most anticipated reports from retailers and others. HP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise

In their reports due Tuesday after the closing bell, HP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise will offer up fiscal fourth-quarter earnings per share (EPS) of $0.44 and $0.51, respectively, according Wall Street. The HP forecast compares with $1.06 in the year ago period, as well as the $0.46 consensus from 49 Estimize respondents. HP has not fallen short of Wall Street's EPS forecasts in recent quarters, but it may be a different ball game now. Revenue for the three months that ended in October is expected to total $12.84 billion at HP and $13.50 billion from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. A year ago, HP's revenue for the quarter came to $28.41 billion. Estimize has the figure pegged at $12.92 billion for HP's most recent quarter, though its respondents have overestimated revenue in the past few periods.

Deere

This Illinois-based industrial will post EPS of $0.83 for its fiscal fourth quarter, if Estimize's consensus forecast is accurate. That would be down from $2.11 in the year-ago period. Wall Street is even less optimistic, with a $0.75 EPS forecast. But note that analysts have handily underestimated per-share earnings in recent periods. The 34 Estimize survey respondents see revenue for the three months that ended in October falling around 23 percent from a year ago to $6.28 billion. That likewise is a bit higher than the Wall Street expectations. Watch for Deere to reveal its latest financial results before Wednesday's regular trading session commences.

Palo Alto Networks and Trina Solar

The Santa Clara-based networking company will post EPS of $0.33 and $288.08 million in revenue, according to 51 Estimize estimates. That would be up from $0.15 per share and $192.35 million in the fiscal first quarter of last year. The solar-power products and systems manufacturer is expected to report $0.36 EPS on revenue of $781.78 million. In the year-ago fiscal third quarter, the Chinese company posted $0.14 per share and $616.84 million. In both cases the Wall Street estimates are a bit more conservative. Yet, both the analysts and Estimize underestimated top and bottom lines in both companies in each of their previous quarters. Trina Solar is expected to share its results first thing Monday morning, while Palo Alto is in deck later that same day. See also: Should Retail Investors Be Worried This Holiday Season?

And Others

Elsewhere, at least some growth in earnings is coming from Analog Devices, Campbell Soup, Chico's FAS, GameStop, Hormel Foods, Mallinckrodt, Patterson Companies, TiVo and Tyson Foods this week, if the analysts are correct. EPS at Brocade Communications are expected to be the same as a year ago. However, the consensus forecasts call for declining earnings when Dollar Tree, DSW, Guess, Seadrill and Tiffany share their latest results.
