US Technology stocks moved up, with Isilon Systems Inc ISLN as the top performer in the list. EMC Corp EMC has agreed to purchase ISLN for $2.25 billion or $33.85 per share in cash. Some of other gainers in the list were Hewlett-Packard Co HPQ, Dell Inc DELL, NetApp Inc NTAP, IBM Corp IBM, Advanced Micro Devices Inc AMD and Motorola Inc MOT. Shares of Gannett Co Inc GCI gained about 1.4% after the company named Paul Saleh as its senior vice president and chief financial officer (CFO). Saleh was earlier managing partner at Menza Partners LLC. Canadian stocks rose, driven by the mining sector. The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained about 0.5%. Shares of Teck Resources Ltd TCK, Royal Bank of Canada RY and Toronto-Dominion TD were the top performers. Shares of Potash Corp of Saskatchewan POT moved down after BHP Billiton BHP decided to withdraw its $130-per-share offer for the Canadian company. US retail sales have risen sharply in October, driven by sales of autos and online items. According to the US Commerce Department, retail sales surged 1.2% in October.
