Stocks Waver on Jobless Claims Stocks were mixed Thursday as a higher-than-expected rise in jobless claims took the shine off early earnings season momentum. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 25 points, or 0.2%, at 11,730. The S&P 500 was flat at 1285, while the Nasdaq Composite was ahead by a little more than a point, or 0.06%, at 2,739.
Chocolate Chips Recalled Nationwide Packs of semi-sweet chocolate chips sold under the Kroger KR Value brand are being recalled due to allergy risks. The semi-sweet chocolate chips, supplied by Barry Callebaut USA, contain milk protein that may cause allergic reactions.
Gold Prices Take Crazy Ride Gold prices were volatile Thursday as investors battled with an on-again, off-again risk trade. Gold for February delivery was down $2.70 to $1,383.10 an ounce at the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The gold price Thursday has traded as high as $1,392.90 and as low a $1,377.20.
Wave Systems, Biodel: Small-Cap Winners Shares of biotech company Biodel BIOD were topping the small-cap space on Thursday, jumping 27% to $2.49.
