A sneak peak at Research in Motion's RIMM new BlackBerry lineup is tantalizing the blogosphere. RIM displayed a 4G version of BlackBerry's PlayBook Tablet at last week's Consumer Electronics Show, but the company appears to prefer spreading news of the new BlackBerry 2011 devices virally.
The RIM 2011 lineup includes a new BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve Apollo, BlackBerry Torch 2, BlackBerry Storm 3, and BlackBerry Dakota. Impressively, the BlackBerry Torch 2 offers a 1.2GHz CPU, versus 600MHz on the company's first model.
The market for Smartphones is aggressive. Competitively, Blackberry devices are sometimes overshadowed by the popular Apple AAPL iPhone and by Google's GOOG Android operating system. November's comScore data showed the iPhone gaining an 0.8% percentage point market share. In contrast, RIM's market share percentage points declined by 4.1%.
Verizon's VZ iPhone launch February 10, 2011, will extend a consumer's choice on which Smartphone to choose. However, the touchability of the iPhone may be up for a stiff competition with RIM's release of the BlackBerry Dakota. The touchable screen and a full QWERTY keypad may make the Dakota a perfect marriage of business savvy and Internet fun.
RIM's BlackBerry Playbook is scheduled for launch sometime in Q1 of 2011.
