'Disneyland' Needs Some Crowdfunding Help

Disneyland needs some help. Just not the Disneyland you might be thinking of.

"Hamtramck Disneyland" is a lot different from Walt Disney Co DIS's resort in California, but it has developed a cult following and become a unique sight-seeing spot in the small Detroit enclave of Hamtramck.

According to Crain's Detroit, The Michigan Economic Development Corp., Michigan State Housing Development Authority and Hatch Art announced a crowdfunding campaign on Patronicity with the goal of $50,000 by August 20. If the goal is attained, the project will win a matching grant with funds from the MSHDA and MEDC's Public Spaces Community Places program.

Dmytro Szylak built the 1,945-square-foot installation. He decorated his backyard with various objects ranging from mechanical fan propellers, plastic horses, and a handmade jet aircraft. It now features features Christmas lights, American flags and photos of celebrities, among other kitschy items, on top of two garages.

Szylak grew up in Ukraine and immigrated to the U.S. and moved to Hamtramck in the 1950s. He began the artwork in the mid-1980s after his retirement from General Motors. Hatch Art took ownership of the popular folk art installation in May, about a year after Szylak's death.
