Google Unveils New Emoji Aimed At Representing Women As Professionals

Keen observers were quick to realize there aren't a lot of emoji characters that reflect the diversity of women's careers. Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL's Google segment is looking to change that.

In a corporate blog post on Thursday, Google announced that it is "promoting gender equality through emoji." The company stated that the emoji characters representing women aren't exactly representative, so it is looking to make things better.

After all, one of Google's most notable senior executives, its Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat, joined the company in March 2015 after serving as the CFO of a major Wall Street bank.

Back in May, Google proposed a change to its emojis that "represent a wider range of professions" for both women and men. The changes were also intended to "reflect the pivotal roles that women play in the world."

On Thursday, the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee added 11 new professional emojis, in both male and female options. The changes will be included in future versions of Android devices and other platforms.

"These new emoji are one of several efforts we're making to better represent women in technology, and to connect girls with the education and resources they need to pursue careers in STEM," the blog stated.
