A Beer World Tour: Cities To Visit And Cities To Avoid

GoEuro is one of the most useful websites for people traveling around Europe. The site helps find and compare transportation options and prices, offering bus, train and plane tickets, as well as car rental and car sharing services.

In addition to this, the site offers a blog with travel tips and a “Price Index Series,” which compares prices for transportation, accommodation, beer, urban transit and even attending a soccer match. Let's take a quick look at GoEuro’s 2016 Beer Price Index, so that beer-loving travelers know which cities to visit and which ones to avoid.

Among the 70 cities from around the world included in the index, Lausanne, Switzerland was the most expensive. A 330 ml. (11.15 oz.) beer in a bar goes for an average price of $17.60, versus just $1.42 in a supermarket. Overall, Lausanne is still the most expensive, boasting an average price of $9.51.

The chart below shows the 10 most expensive cities in the world to get a beer in a bar.

If you're more of a saver and tend to get your beers at a supermarket, cities to avoid include Sydney, Australia, where a 330 ml. beer retails at $2.60, Reykjavik, Island, $2.57, and Oslo, Norway, $2.54.

On the other hand, the cheapest cities to drink beer at a bar are Kiev, Ukraine; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Krakow, Poland, where you’ll pay an average of $2.63, $2.80 and $2.92 respectively.

Now, if you’re a big beer drinker, maybe you’ll feel more comfortable at a city where people drink a lot of it, like Prague, Krakow, Warsaw or Belgrade, all of which boast average yearly consumption figures above 30 gallons per person.
