SAMSUNG ELECTONIC KRW500 SSNLF’s Galaxy Note 7 has been nothing short of a disaster for Samsung and its shareholders. Not surprisingly, the latest data from TickerTags shows social media sentiment toward the Galaxy Note has plummeted.
TickerTags monitors social media sites to identify trends by searching for words and phrases that appear together in social media content, such as tweets.
On September 2, Samsung issued a recall of Galaxy Note 7 devices, saying that the company would “voluntarily replace [customers’] current device with a new one over the coming weeks.” The issue with the Galaxy Note 7 stems from defective batteries, which have reportedly exploded and caught fire.
A week after the initial recall, Samsung issued a much more strongly-worded recall, urging customers to power off their devices completely and exchange them “now.”
The FAA and several international airlines have now stepped in and issued a warning for travelers not to charge or power on their Note 7s during flights.
The airline warnings seem to have resonated with social media users. After the recall was issued but before the airline restrictions, only about 7 percent of “Galaxy Note” social media mentions were negative. However, since the implementation of the restrictions, 21 percent of average daily mentions have been negative.
Samsung’s stock lost about $25 billion in market cap in two weeks following the Galaxy Note recall.
