Xbox One Beats Sony PS4 Sales 3 Months In A Row

Monthly sales data released by industry tracking firm NPD Group showed that Microsoft Corporation MSFT is the unparalleled king for the third month running as far as gaming consoles are concerned.

The software giant's Xbox One edged out Sony Corp (ADR) SNE's PS4 on the unit sales metric in the month of September. The lead over its Japanese rival's product was attributed to aggressive pricing by Microsoft and the new Xbox One S bundles. Microsoft trimmed prices of Xbox One to $249 in July, following up on a cut to $279 in June.

Meanwhile, Sony is hitting back. The company launched its PS4 slim on September 15 and its PSVR hit the shelves only recently. The company is also set to launch its PS4 Pro console, which will support VR gaming, in November, on time to take advantage of the holiday season buying binge.

The heat is on: With new iterations, aggressive sales pitch, the competition out there is cut throat. It remains to be seen if Microsoft can emerge unscathed, keeping up the momentum seen in the last three months.

In pre-market trading, Microsoft's shares were up 0.49 percent at $57.20 and Sony's sales rose were down 0.21 percent at $33.20.
