Benzinga recently talked with several marijuana industry experts and entrepreneurs, and they all seem to agree on one thing: President-elect Donald Trump is unlikely to oppose to legal cannabis, even with Jeff Sessions occupying the Attorney General’s office.
- Alan Brochstein, founding partner at New Cannabis Ventures and founder at 420 Investor, said he did not think the Cole Memo would be ripped up. “I think the genie is already out of the proverbial bottle,” he voiced.
- 420 Property’s CEO Ryan R. George argued, “I am not worried at all [about a Republican government]. I think everybody has somewhat spoken, and they want this industry to bring more jobs into the economy [...] If you look at the map of the United States [...] more than half of the states have cannabis laws.”
- The ArcView Group’s CEO Troy Dayton added, “Some of our biggest wins were in the red states [...] So, I think it would be political suicide for Donald Trump to go back on a campaign promise on a hugely popular issue like this.”
In other recent interviews, a number of additional experts declared they believed similar things:
- Marijuana retail store owner Ian Eisenberg told mynorthwest.com he believed Trump would defend states’ rights. Nate Bradley, executive director of the California Cannabis Industry Association expressed a similar view while taking to USA Today.
- Robert McKenna, former attorney general of Washington, assured it would come down to a question of priorities for Jeff Sessions. “[I]s this the fight they really want to have? He’s got to decide what his priorities are and whether the fight is worth it," he told KIRO 7.
- Sam Kamin, a marijuana law specialist at the University of Denver supplemented, we’ve come so far already that “it can’t be undone without a heavy cost.”
- Mason Tvert of the Marijuana Policy Project continued, “[Trump] talked about changing federal policies at almost every possible level, but he never said he’s itching to change the way the government is handling state marijuana laws.”
