Amazon Prime Air Makes Its First Delivery

Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN CEO Jeff Bezos teased the world three years ago that the company will one day be able to deliver its products through a drone.

That day is here.

Amazon announced in a blog post that it completed the first every Prime Air Delivery on December 7.

Amazon began delivering drone deliveries in Cambridge, England. In fact, a top secret development facility has been researching the drones unbeknown to the general public for several years.

Based on a video Amazon provided, the first order may have consisted of a Fire TV stick and a bag of popcorn.

How It Works

  • Within minutes of a customer placing an order for delivery via Prime Air, an Amazon drone makes it way down an automated track and then takes off with the customer's package. The drones are also fully autonomous from takeoff to landing and return.
  • The drones are guided by GPS and can carry packages up to five pounds.
  • Within 30 minutes of placing an order the customer receives their package.

For the time being there are just two customers. In the coming months the trial will be expanded to dozens of customers within a few miles of its now not so secret drone delivery facility.

Following the second round of trials, Amazon expects to add hundreds of new clients to the trial.

After that, the sky is the limit.
