The next iPhone from Apple Inc. AAPL could have a new design, a new name, a wireless charger and advancements in augmented reality, according to Loup Ventures analyst and Apple-watcher Gene Munster.
Predictions
As this year marks the tenth anniversary of the iPhone, Munster predicts in a Friday report that it won’t be named the iPhone 7S or 8, but the iPhone X.
The folks in Cupertino typically announce the new iPhone in September; the exact date of the smartphone’s 10-year anniversary passed on January 9.
The demonstration of the new iPhone may focus on its augmented reality capabilities, Munster said — a technology on which Apple is “doubling down.”
AR gives a live view of a real-world environment with added computer-generated input, and came to wide public attention last year with the launch of Pokémon GO.
“Games are the obvious choice to highlight new AR features, but we envision killer AR apps in search and discovery, social, education and many other use cases,” Munster said.
The next iPhone could lose the home button, Munster said, and replace it with haptic feedback — allowing for an edge-to-edge display screen.
Other improvements could include an OLED screen, a dual lens camera on all models, sophisticated proximity sensors and a sensor capable of 3D modeling and image processing.
