Alphabet Inc's GOOG GOOGL YouTube unit announced earlier this week users now watch more than one billion hours worth of content on its platform. But the company isn't stopping there and is now offering users even more reason to part ways with their cable providers.
YouTube on Tuesday said it will launch a new paid TV service that gives users the ability to stream many live TV channels for just $35 a month. The move may seem contradictory at first as many view YouTube to be an "anti-TV" platform.
Speaking with Bloomberg's Lucas Show during Tuesday's "Bloomberg Technology" segment, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said YouTube users have shown strong demand for TV content which creates a natural opportunity for YouTube to capitalize.
"We saw this giant opportunity of how can we take all of this amazing TV content and make it available to a generation that loves content - but they want their content on demand and want to watch it on any device," the executive explained.

Wojcicki said YouTube already works with major TV networks to bring clips onto the streaming video platform and many of the networks recognize the opportunity YouTube brings to "take it to the next level."
Wojcicki also reaffirmed YouTube's commitment to keep its current ad-supported platform, but the paid subscription model represents an opportunity to bring content to cord cutters and people who never even had a cable or TV subscription before.
