There is no shortage of urgent issues to address in America’s health care landscape. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the new Health and Human Services secretary, has endorsed a “Make America Healthy Again” platform focused on eliminating food additives and environmental toxins to address chronic disease. In his confirmation hearings, Kennedy stated: “I’m going to make America healthier than other countries in the world right now — we’re the sickest.”
It’s true that health indicators in the U.S. lag far behind our peer nations. It’s also true that we must improve our country’s food system, as many scientists and experts have been championing for decades. But the problem facing families is much deeper than food dyes and ingredients. Poverty is the root cause of poor health for too many Americans.
