A leading provider of unique and tailor-made holiday packages, the Baltic Travel Company, has shared the latest statistics which reflect huge demand for Northern Lights travel experiences. The company provides varied Northern Lights trips, including to Lapland, the Nordics, and the wider Aurora Zone.
Data indicates that a significant spike in interest in less conventional travel experiences, holidays that incorporate authentic cultures, cuisines and excursions, and changes in travel trends have made a remarkable impact on Arctic tourism – with the Aurora Borealis forming a major aspect of the attraction.
Exploring Evolving Travel Trends and Sharp Rises in Northern Lights Tourism
The Baltic Travel Company, a seasoned and multinational team of travel specialists, gathered data from reputable sources to investigate the reasons and sentiments behind the steep and sustained demand for its tour packages – with the most notable rises around holidays focused on Northern Lights tourism.
It found that the market size, currently estimated to be worth £645 million, is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8% between now and 2030, with an equal increase in demand from families, couples, parties of friends, and solo travellers.
Travel economists have estimated that looking forward to 2033, the Northern Lights global tourism market could multiply several fold, reaching a value of £1,660 million—with specific destinations like Finland seeing a jump in hotel searches of 197% in 2023 compared to the year before.
The statistics are also borne out across the Northern Norway region, with the Norwegian travel board recording 320,000 international visitors over the 2022-23 winter period, compared to a 328% rise in tourism in Finland.
Analysing the visitor demographics shows that the younger adult age group between 18 and 34 is behind much of the demand, accounting for 32% of the total market.
This shows how travel trends have changed with the times, and younger adults are more likely to book unconventional and genuine experiences rather than opting for the all-inclusive deals that were typical in mainstream travel in previous years.
How Arctic Travel Professionals Are Responding to Demand for Northern Lights Holiday Packages
Birthe Nielsen, Managing Director of the Baltic Travel Company says, ‘As with every tour, excursion, and package, we have experienced all of our Northern Lights holidays first-hand. From a personal point of view, it isn't hard to see why this magical natural phenomenon is inspiring travel choices and drawing guests from around the world who want to see the beauty of the lights for themselves.
However, we also believe that there are several contributing factors. They include better travel and transport links and more direct flights to far-flung destinations in Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
There are also greater options to create responsible, sustainable travel plans using eco-accommodations, carbon offsets and participating in educational experiences that attract guests who keep the environment at front of mind when making their travel decisions.
We've found that more and more travellers are prepared to conduct research or ask for customised advice, steering away from pre-packaged and all-inclusive resorts, which many recognise don't provide the same depth of experience – especially when they miss out on activities, local delicacies, artisanal produce and cultural attractions outside of resorts.
Over the years, it has been wonderful to see more guests realise that Northern Lights holidays are accessible and highly affordable. We pour our efforts into creating unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime holidays that incorporate everything from Aurora chases to husky sledding, winter sports activities, and even excursions into the furthest reaches of the Arctic.'
Balancing Northern Lights Tourism Demand and Sustainability
The Baltic Travel Company has previously shared advice and guidance on responsible tourism and remains at the forefront of providing travel experiences that support local economies, contribute to conservation programmes, and offer options for travel with a minimal carbon footprint.
It frequently features eco-lodges and sustainable hotels and provides local guides to lead tours like Northern Lights hunts and snowmobiling expeditions.
Birthe adds, ‘The level of excitement, enthusiasm, and the thrill of trying things completely new, seeing the Arctic wildlife in its natural habitat, and exploring the beautifully preserved and protected wilderness is a world away from a standard holiday, and it's a privilege to support all our guests in making their travel dreams come true—which, for many, means seeing the Northern Lights in all their glory.'
