Stocks Fall on Global Growth Concerns Stocks sunk under the threat of global interest rate hikes Thursday despite a round of mostly positive economic news. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 77 points, or 0.7%, to 11,748. The S&P 500 was lower by 10 points, or 0.8%, at 1272, and the Nasdaq was off by 33 points, or 1.2%, at 2692.
Morgan Stanley Beats Estimates, Trading Slows Morgan Stanley MS beat Wall Street's earnings expectations on Thursday, but showed signs of a slowdown in trading activity that has sent financial stocks lower this week. Morgan earned $600 million, or 41 cents per share, up 60% from a year ago when the bank earned $376 million, or 29 cents per share. Net revenues were 14% higher at $7.8 billion, reflecting improvements on an annual basis in all business segments -- from asset management to institutional securities.
4 Stocks to Get a Boost From Inflation A spike in inflation, forecast by economists for well over a year, may arrive in 2011. For investors, that means avoiding most bonds and steering toward inflation-hedging investments such as gold and energy commodities, coal and oil in particular. Energy stocks are up about 4% this year, second only to financial shares' 5% gain.
Nokia Stumbles Anew With AT&T Snub Nokia NOK kicks the year off with another bleak start. The No. 1 phone maker got snubbed by AT&T T again, and has had to withdraw its latest smartphone from a planned U.S. launch, according to The Wall Street Journal.
