Stocks Shake Off Early Losses, Finish Flat (SPY, QQQQ, GLD, USO, TLT, UUP)

Stocks opened lower on Monday, but were able to rally back to the flatline by the end of the trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 1 point lower at 10,302. The widely watched blue-chip index traded in a range between 10,209 and 10,333. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF SPY closed 0.05% lower at $108.26. Volume was very light today with a little more than 147 million shares trading hands versus a 3-month daily average of 256 million. The PowerShares QQQ Trust ETF QQQQ, which tracks the performance of the Nasdaq 100, gained 0.18% to finish at $44.80. The widely traded ETF's biggest component, Apple AAPL, lost 0.59% to $247.64. Gold was strong on the day, with COMEX futures hitting a six-week high of $1,226.20. The SPDR Gold Trust ETF GLD closed 0.83% higher at $119.73. The GLD has gained 2.62% in the last month. Oil continued its slide on Monday. NYMEX crude futures lost 0.21% to just above $75. The United States Oil Fund ETF USO shed 0.53% to close at $33.61. Volume was on the light side. Treasuries exploded to the upside again as investors across the world continue to seek shelter in U.S. debt. The iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF TLT gained 2.5% to $104.85. The TLT set a new 52-week high during the trading session. The yield on the 10-year note fell 10.9 basis points to 2.56%. The U.S. Dollar lost ground during the trading session. The PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish ETF UUP, which tracks the performance of the dollar versus a basket of foreign currencies, shed 0.62% to $23.96. The U.S. Dollar Index itself lost 0.49% to 59.43. The closely watched EUR/USD pair is currently trading at $1.2823.
