ChatGPT Tops Wikipedia's Most Viewed Articles In 2023; Elon Musk Clings To Top 20 Spot

Zinger Key Points
  • Wikimedia revealed ChatGPT as the top-viewed article in 2023 with 79 million views across all languages.
  • Elon Musk, Matthew Perry, and "Deaths in 2023" were a part of the Top 20 list.

The Wikimedia Foundation disclosed that in 2023, ChatGPT was the most viewed article on Wikipedia, attracting 79 million views across its various language editions.

What Happened: In 2023, the English language version of Wikipedia amassed over 84 billion views. Of these, the ChatGPT article alone accounted for more than 49 million views. During the first half of the year, the page consistently attracted daily views ranging from 100,000 to 400,000.

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November 2022, and it quickly gained popularity, becoming the fastest-growing consumer app by reaching 100 million users in just over two months.

Competitors like Google's Bard, Microsoft's Bing, and Elon Musk's recently released chatbot Grok are also available in the market.

AI gained popularity for several reasons, both favorable and unfavorable. On the positive side, AI aids in enhancing human efficiency and speeding up task completion. However, a notable concern is the potential for AI to supplant human roles in certain job sectors.

Others In The List: The Top 25 in the popular list included Musk, Matthew Perry, Taylor Swift, and "Deaths in 2023." Musk stood at number 19 on the list with 14.4 million page views as he topped the year by rebranding Twitter to X. In March 2023, he also founded X.AI, an artificial intelligence company for developing a generative AI program competing with existing offerings like ChatGPT.

Ranking second in the list was "Deaths in 2023" with 42.7 million page views, followed by the 2023 Cricket World Cup and Indian Premier League with 38.1 million and 32 million page views.
