I decided to look at the share price performance of the big banks during the past year. The result: The big money center banks have been dead money over the last 52 weeks.
If you purchased shares of JP Morgan JPM during the middle of August last year you return would be -7.50% as of the close today. Buying Citigroup C would have been a slightly better investment-it's down only 3.4%. Bank of America BAC, however, is down a whopping 20.3% over the last year.
Wells Fargo WFC has also been a disappointment, shedding 2.3% in the last year.
The dividend payouts have not helped offset capital losses either. Annual dividend yields are the following:
JP Morgan: 0.50%
Citigroup: None
BofA: 0.30%
Wells: 0.80%
Clearly the last year has been anything but a bull market for big banks.
