The pandemic changed how we think about our lives – including our retirement plans.
Following the strenuous effects of the pandemic, some 28.6 million older Americans said they were retiring in the third quarter of 2020. According to a Pew Research report, this number is 3.2 million more than those who said they were retired in the same period in 2019. According to the same report, 2020 represented the highest increase in baby boomer retirement in the last nine years.
Some argue that the rise of the internet and e-commerce has worked alongside the pandemic to spur the desire for financial freedom and early retirement. Consider the TikTokers, internet entrepreneurs, non-fungible token (NFT) auctioneers, and retail investors who have made millions of dollars in professions that did not exist – at least in the form that they do today – 20 years ago.
The rise of these professionals, alongside a global demand for the gig economy, has reshaped how people think about the future. The work-till-you-are-70-years-old narrative has long been met with grudging sentiment and arguably never more so than in the 21st century.
For those who want to take control over their financial world, Axos Financial Inc. AX states that it offers a host of borrowing, banking, and investing services that can help them live now and arrive prepared for the future.
A Newer Bank
Some 50-plus years separate Axos from competitors like Toronto-Dominion Bank TD and an additional 150 years separates it from Citigroup Inc. C. Axos’s youth, the company believes, gives it a competitive edge.
“Born digital, we challenge the status quo by liberating people from the constraints of traditional banking. We provide technology-driven financial services that evolve to anticipate the needs of today’s customers, helping them stay ahead of modern life,” says an Axos spokesperson.
Axos Invest, for example, allows investors to kickstart or upgrade their income streams. The professional trader has access to Axos Elite, an added service costing $10/month, which combines industry-standard execution with commission-free trades on equities and exchange-traded funds (ETF) (other fees may apply).
Investors needing more passive forms of investment could subscribe to Axos’ managed portfolios, which allow them to build an investment profile fitted to their specifications without the need for work. Axos customers will also enjoy a 0.24% annual advisory fee.
Axos additionally offers three individual retirement account (IRA) classes, depending on the needs of each customer. With a ROTH IRA, for example, customers can withdraw contributions at any time without taxes or penalty, while customers with a traditional IRA can qualify for an account without the need for a minimum income requirement.
