No Avocado Toast, No Starbucks - Now No Breakfast? Gen Z, Millennials Path To Riches Paved In Starvation

Zinger Key Points
  • WSJ reporter points out that a lot of breakfast staples, including butter and eggs, are expensive right now.
  • Tuesday’s CPI report came in slightly higher than expectations, at 6.4% year-over-year.

We’ve all heard the advice before, “Just don’t buy a latte or avocado toast, then you’ll be able to afford a house.” But, many millennials know that is not the case. Most people aren’t going to Starbucks Corp SBUX daily or regularly splurging on $8 avocado toast.

But, amid January’s slightly higher-than-expected CPI report, the Wall Street Journal had a new suggestion for millennials fighting inflation: skip breakfast altogether. To the WSJ’s credit, eggs have gotten ridiculously expensive.

Alan Macleod, a reporter at MintPressNews, shared a screenshot of the WSJ article, tweeting “Poor? Have you tried starving?”. Macleod’s tweet had nearly a million views, and more than 30,000 likes.

January’s Inflation: Tuesday’s CPI report came in slightly higher than expectations, at 6.4% year-over-year. This is just slightly lower than December’s year-over-year reading of 6.5%, meaning that the pace at which inflation is coming down may be slowing.

The month-over-month CPI number actually increased .5% in January, its highest increase since October. Areas like food, particularly eggs, gas and housing prices kept the CPI elevated.

WSJ’s Advice: Gabriel Rubin, a national economics reporter for the WSJ, said that because a lot of breakfast staples, including butter and eggs, are so expensive right now, you could save money by skipping breakfast altogether. Better advice would be to find alternatives to expensive breakfast items, it is still possible to eat breakfast on a budget (try overnight oats, peanut butter toast, etc).

If you’re a millennial like me, you probably want to have the ability to buy a house at some point in your life. And hopefully, we’re able to do so without starving ourselves.
