  • Authorities arrested tech executive Nima Momeni, a man that Bob Lee knew, according to a report.
  • The mayor of San Francisco asked for the federal government to help address crime in the city.

According to a report by Mission Local's Joe Eskenazi, an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of CashApp Founder Bob Lee.

Lee was tragically killed in a stabbing incident in San Francisco during the early morning hours of April 4th. Authorities arrested tech executive Nima Momeni, a man that Lee knew, according to the report.

At the time of the murder, many people in the tech community raised the issue of San Francisco’s crime problems. Jason Calcanis tweeted “it’s a disaster and you know it” referring to crime in the city and Lee’s killing.

Elon Musk replied to a tweet about Lee’s murder, saying, “violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately” and tagged the city’s district attorney.

Lee joined Block Inc SQ (then called Square) and created CashApp in 2013. He left CashApp after just a year, but would go on to invest in a number of other tech companies, including Clubhouse.

Just a few days before the murder, the mayor of San Francisco asked for the federal government to help address crime in the city. But, there is also data indicating that the homicide rate in San Francisco is lower than it is in similar-sized cities.

Many people are pointing out that if Lee’s murder was allegedly carried out by another tech executive, it goes against the narrative and lens in which some talked about the murder when it occurred. Mike Sington, a retired executive from NBC Universal, shared his thoughts on Twitter.

“It apparently was not a random big city street crime that the far-right made it out to be,” Sington said. “San Francisco police arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of Cash App founder Bob Lee.”
