In sports, it’s easy to think of things in numbers. What’s a team’s win-loss record, how many points did so-and-so score last night, etc. But behind all these numbers, are humans like us.
In an emotional interview a couple of weeks ago, professional golfer (and all-around great guy) Nick Hardy spoke candidly about missing out on the next round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. In the PGA, the top 70 players in a season make it to the playoffs. Then, through two tournaments, the field is whittled down to 50, and then to 30 before the season’s final tournament, the Tour Championship.

Hardy secured a spot in this year's FedEx Cup playoffs, making the cut in 20 out of 30 tournaments he played in, and picking up his first PGA tournament win in April at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. But, after tying for 49th place in last week’s St. Jude Championship, Hardy’s FedEx Cup ranking sat at 52, just two spots away from being eligible to advance to last weekend’s BMW Championship.
Through some tears, Hardy explained to the interviewer that while it stings he did not make the next round of the playoffs, he is proud of his growth.
Hardy recently went viral after a swing in which he bent his club on a tree, but was still able to stick the ball next to the hole and make a birdie. Hardy’s golf teacher had to go to a Home Depot just to fix his club, so he was able to play the next day (listen to the clip here).
Tune in to hear Hardy talk about the game, his career and more on my RazReport podcast.
