AI might be the trending topic this year as it dominates conversations about the future of jobs.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023 found that 23% of jobs globally will change in the next five years, and while it expects 69 million new jobs to be created, 83 million will be eliminated.
According to a report from McKinsey, other jobs will change radically thanks to generative AI’s potential to automate between 60% to 70% of the tasks that many knowledge workers engage in every day.
And a new report from IBM’s Institute for Business Value has found that executives estimate that 40% of their workforce will need to reskill as a result of implementing AI and automation over the next three years. The report also says that organizations which focus on evolving their operating model are already outperforming on revenue growth.
Microsoft's most recent Work Trend Index Annual Report, agrees that AI looks set to help workers in their jobs, and not replace them.
“This new generation of AI will remove the drudgery of work and unleash creativity,” says Satya Nadella, Microsoft chairman and CEO, who added that “There’s an enormous opportunity for AI-powered tools to help alleviate digital debt, build AI aptitude, and empower employees.”
Already, there are 33 times as many job postings mentioning topics like generative AI and GPT than there were one year ago, but it is just one job title that is experiencing growing demand.
Growth jobs
CompTIA's most recent State of the Tech Workforce report predicts a 3% growth in size of the US tech workforce this year.
It highlights in particular that roles across data science and data analysis; cybersecurity analysts and engineers; web designers and UI/UX professionals; software developers and engineers, and software QA and testers are experiencing the biggest growth.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) agrees, estimating that the employment rate for data scientists will grow by 36% by 2031. The BLS also says that software roles will grow 25% to 2031, and that when it comes to cybersecurity jobs, it expects demand to increase by nearly 35% to 2031, or an additional 56,500 positions.
In an uncertain tech landscape, characterized by hundreds of thousands of layoffs across tech companies large and small from the middle of 2022, knowing that there are still sure things out there is reassuring news for workers.

CompTIA’s report says that the estimated average salary of tech workers is $100,615 (double the median salary across all occupations), but this can be far higher depending on your level of experience.
