During interviews in the same period, Musk discussed the vital role Tesla plays in moving the world toward eco-friendly transportation. Nonetheless, Musk sees the transition to sustainable energy and a sustainable economy as "one of the biggest challenges the world has ever faced." He projected that the transition would likely take decades to accomplish. He identified offshore wind power in the North Sea, along with stationary battery packs, as potential robust solutions for sustainable energy, particularly during winter.

Musk has also begun to discuss other dimensions of sustainability, including societal aspects. He expressed concern about declining birth rates, viewing adequate population levels as essential for the continuity of civilization. This adds another layer to his comprehensive vision of what it takes to ensure a sustainable future for the planet.

The real-world impact of Musk's sustainability efforts is evident, especially through Tesla's influence on the auto industry. Electric car sales increased by 55% in 2022 compared to 2021 according to International Energy Agency.

Tesla's success prompted major automakers like General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen to accelerate their electric vehicle plans. Innovations in Tesla's battery technology, such as the Powerwall and Megapack, are also making renewable energy more viable by solving storage issues.
