Elon Musk Warned, 'We're Running Out Of Dead Dinosaurs, And Betting Against Science Is the Dumbest Experiment In History' Amid One Of The Biggest Challenges The World Has Ever Faced

In 2018, billionaire Elon Musk vocalized his concerns for a sustainable future. His public messages have been a call for decisive action against climate degradation for years.

When Michael E. Mann, a renowned climate scientist, stated that climate change was intensifying events like droughts, heatwaves and fires, Musk responded with urgency on X, formerly Twitter. He questioned the continued reliance on fossil fuels, posting, "We know we'll run out of dead dinosaurs to mine for fuel & have to use sustainable energy eventually, so why not go renewable now & avoid increasing risk of climate catastrophe?"

For Musk, the stakes could not be higher. "Betting that science is wrong & oil companies are right is the dumbest experiment in history by far," wrote Musk, the entrepreneur spearheading ventures like SpaceX, Neuralink Corp. and Tesla Inc.

During interviews in the same period, Musk discussed the vital role Tesla plays in moving the world toward eco-friendly transportation. He described Tesla as a linchpin for spurring other automakers into the electric vehicle market, emphasizing that the environmental crisis was a shared existential concern, transcending societal divisions like political affiliations or religious beliefs. While launching a car company might be simple, he said keeping it afloat and successful was an arduous task that required relentless effort from his entire team.

Musk's viewpoints have shown nuanced evolution without wavering from the goal of sustainability. Speaking at a conference in Norway last year, he conceded that oil and gas were still necessary in the short term to prevent societal collapse.

Nonetheless, Musk sees the transition to sustainable energy and a sustainable economy as "one of the biggest challenges the world has ever faced." He projected that the transition would likely take decades to accomplish. He identified offshore wind power in the North Sea, along with stationary battery packs, as potential robust solutions for sustainable energy, particularly during winter.

Musk has also begun to discuss other dimensions of sustainability, including societal aspects. He expressed concern about declining birth rates, viewing adequate population levels as essential for the continuity of civilization. This adds another layer to his comprehensive vision of what it takes to ensure a sustainable future for the planet.

The real-world impact of Musk's sustainability efforts is evident, especially through Tesla's influence on the auto industry. Electric car sales increased by 55% in 2022 compared to 2021 according to International Energy Agency.

Tesla's success prompted major automakers like General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen to accelerate their electric vehicle plans. Innovations in Tesla's battery technology, such as the Powerwall and Megapack, are also making renewable energy more viable by solving storage issues.

Tesla's Solar Roof further contributes to household sustainability by integrating solar cells into roofing materials.
