Sud Scrub Leads Initiative To Remove Plastic From The Environment With Every Purchase

Plastic pollution is a serious problem worldwide. According to the UN Environmental Program, 22,000 metric tons of plastic enter our waterways each day which is the equivalent of 2,000 school buses of plastic waste dumped into the oceans, rivers and lakes.

One significant contributor to this plastic plague is synthetic loofahs. Not only do they need frequent replacement due to bacterial growth, but they also disintegrate over time, releasing harmful microplastic particles into our water systems.

These are the reasons why Sud Scrub, a company established by twin brothers Raymond and Steven Truong, developed the Sud Scrub Body Scrubber, which is made of 100% silicone, not plastic, and is infused with silver to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi on its surface. This means that the Sud Scrub only needs to be replaced once a year unlike plastic loofahs which need to be replaced at least once a month. And, because the Sud Scrub is made of 100% silicone it 100% can be recycled, unlike plastic loofahs.

But Sud Scrub’s commitment doesn’t stop at producing plastic-free bath essentials. They are dedicated to making a real impact on plastic pollution. They've teamed up with CleanHub, a waste collection company, and for every Sud Scrub purchase you make, you're funding the removal of five pounds of plastic waste from our environment. Since September 2022, they've already removed over 66,000 pounds of plastic - that's nearly 3 SCHOOL BUSES of plastic waste, thanks to the dedicated efforts of CleanHub’s collection partners in India, Indonesia, and Cambodia.

CleanHub’s collection partners gather plastic rubbish from waterways and fishermen’s bycatch, as well as implement waste management systems in communities to prevent plastic from entering the environment in the first place. These interventions seek to encourage communities to proactively manage their plastic waste rather than openly dumping their garbage or burning it, which also has severely detrimental effects on the environment.

Sud Scrub’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there. Their packaging is made from 100% paper, reducing plastic use even further. And when your Sud Scrub has served its purpose, it can be recycled too. If your local recycling program doesn't accept silicone, don't worry; send your old scrubber back to Sud Scrub, and they'll recycle it for you. Plus, you'll receive a $5 credit on your next Sud Scrub purchase as a thank-you for helping to close the recycling loop.

One of Sud Scrub’s guiding principles is to focus on solving problems. In Raymond and Steven’s minds, building everyday products without using plastic is the starting point that is easily followed up by not using any plastic packaging. However, the real impact comes from supporting systems like CleanHub that are focused on empowering local communities to reverse the overwhelming rising tide of global plastic pollution.

“We've seen first-hand that plastic is a global problem. When we recently visited our partner collection hub in Indonesia, we saw plastic trash that came from Thailand, washed up on the shore by the ocean,” says Raymond Truong, co-founder of Sud Scrub. “With our partnership with CleanHub, we're not just trying to collect as much plastic waste as possible, but we're trying to figure out other ways to make more of an impact. We want our business to be a model for others, showing that you don't have to be a large multinational company to have a positive impact. The only way humanity will be able to solve the plastic problem is by getting everyone on board and working as a community to eliminate plastic waste. That's what we and our Sud Scrub community are trying to do here – to prove to everyone that making a great product while also empowering our community to make a positive impact by removing plastic waste is how change happens.”
