Here's How Much Berkshire Hathaway Stock Charlie Munger Owned, Why It Was So Much Less Than Warren Buffett

Charlie Munger, the legendary investor and former vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE: BRK-A)(NYSE: BRK-B), passed away Tuesday in California at the age of 99. Munger, the long-time right-hand man to Warren Buffett, held more than $2 billion worth of Berkshire stock as well as other assets. 

According to the latest 13F filings from October, Munger owned a little more than 4,000 shares of Berkshire, valued at more than $2 billion. Since Buffett and Munger began working together in the 1960s, Buffett always had a larger piece of the pie compared to Munger.

Buffett currently holds more than 200,000 shares of Berkshire Hathaway.

In the 1990s, Munger owned nearly 20,000 shares of Berkshire. Throughout the last 30 years, Munger has sold or donated more than 75% of his stake in the company. 

"I'm deliberately taking my net worth down," Munger said in 2013. "My thinking is, I'm not immortal, and I won't need it where I'm going."

Munger’s Donations: Munger made a number of significant contributions and donations to various universities and schools throughout the country. Some include the Stanford University Law School (which now has a Munger Graduate Residence hall) and the University of Michigan.

Munger also gave a large portion of his shares to his eight children following the death of his wife in 2010.
