Berberine: Cheaper Alternative For Weight Loss, But Consult Your Doctor First

The latest TikTok health trend, "Nature's own Ozempic," revolves around berberine, an herbal preparation that the social media influencers claim can aid in weight loss.

When individuals cannot lose weight through conventional diet and exercise, they often turn to medications.

One prominent prescription medication for this purpose is Novo Nordisk A/S's NVO Ozempic (semaglutide), primarily used to treat diabetes but also leads to weight loss.

However, it has a lengthy list of side effects, and demand for the drug has caused supply issues, and people have likely started seeking alternatives online or at pharmacies. One such alternative is berberine.

Berberine is a bitter-tasting chemical extracted from the roots of plants like goldenseal and barberry.

Wall Street Journal notes that clinical studies have shown that berberine leads to modest weight loss in obese individuals. However, the data are inconclusive since most published studies are small and of varying quality.

The strongest evidence comes from two meta-analyses, which combine and analyze the results of multiple studies. These analyses indicate that oral consumption of berberine at a daily dosage of 300-3,000mg is associated with modest reductions in body mass index, waist circumference, and body weight (approximately 3kg).

The exact mechanisms by which berberine aids in weight loss are not yet fully understood. However, a recent systematic review suggests that it influences GLP-1 levels similar to Ozempic but likely achieves weight loss through additional means.

Despite being available over the counter, berberine is not inherently safe. Common side effects include diarrhea, constipation, gas, and upset stomach.

In large quantities, berberine can be fatal. Berberine can also interact with numerous drugs and supplements.
