M2Bio Sciences, a nutraceutical biotechnology company known as the Institute of Biomedical Research Corp. MRES, has recently established a research chair at the University of Pretoria in South Africa for the study of phytomedicines.
The company focuses on alternative plant-based cannabinoids, medical psilocybin, and mental health therapeutic research, all powered by artificial intelligence.
Jeff Robinson, CEO of M2Bio Sciences stated: "We need to emphasize the value of AI in African research. It is important to digitize the great research and developments on the continent."
Its collaboration with the University of Pretoria aims to advance research into plant medicines and explore the application of AI and machine learning in drug discovery and forensic science.
The official signing ceremony took place on May 12th, 2023, with key representatives from M2Bio Sciences, the University of Pretoria, and Enterprises University of Pretoria in attendance.
Under the partnership, the UP Biodiscovery Centre, led by Professor Vinesh Maharaj, will spearhead commercial natural product research and development.
The M2Bio Sciences research chair will focus on the development of science-backed premium health and wellness products over the next four years.
"An integral part of the research is to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to discover natural product lead compounds that can be developed as pharmaceutical and food ingredients," per a press release.
More details about the agreement and ongoing research will be released soon, according to Robinson.
