FendX Technologies Inc. Sets Out To Slow The Spread Of Bacteria And Viruses With Nanotechnology

Disseminated on behalf of FendX Technologies Inc.

The number of antibiotic-resistant infections continues to rise and these infections have become difficult to treat. As it stands, over 2.8 million of these infections occur annually in the U.S. Of those, about 99,000 people die each year and many of these pathogens are from surface contamination in hospitals and beyond. The cost to treat them is a staggering $28 billion a year, and that's in the U.S. alone.

Enter FendX Technologies Inc. FDXTF FNDX, the nanotechnology company from Ontario, Canada. It is developing products with a focus on reducing the spread of pathogens on surfaces. REPELWRAP™ film, its lead product under development, is a protective surface coating film that when applied to surfaces has been shown to instantly prevent pathogens from adhering to its surface and significantly reduce their spread.

Pathogens Are Everywhere

FendX’s patent-pending nanotechnology combines micro and nano-layers and thermal shrinking to create a film that repels bacteria, viruses, liquids and blood. When touched, the contamination essentially stays on the hand and doesn't transfer to the surface. REPELWRAP™ film is anticipated to be applied to many different surfaces like push doors, handrails, etc.

FendX is also working on a spray version of the film, an early-stage innovation that seems poised to be easier to apply and has the potential to expand market opportunities.

Born Out Of McMaster University

FendX emerged in July 2020, and in early 2021 licensed the nanotechnology from McMaster University. FendX was impressed with films McMaster produced which significantly reduced adherence and spread of MRSA and COVID-19-like viruses by more than 98% (references here and here). Dr. Carolyn Myers, CEO of FendX, stated during a recent interview that stopping pathogens from adhering to surfaces protected with FendX’s nano-coated film prevents bacteria and viruses from sticking to the surface, reducing their ability to replicate and be spread. She believes developing products using their nanotechnology could contribute to the global efforts to mitigate the spread of dangerous pathogens.

What Sets It Apart

FendX reports that what sets its nano-coated film apart from others is that it instantly repels preventing bacteria and viruses from sticking to its surface – something competing products can’t do. Rival films use metal ions such as copper or silver in their films to kill bacteria and viruses, but it can take time for them to be killed leaving a window of opportunity for them to be transmitted before they are killed.

FendX reports that REPELWRAP™ film not only instantly repels bacteria and viruses but provides 24/7 protection which current disinfecting practices can’t offer as they are short-acting cleaning solutions.

It's Big Business

Protecting surfaces from pathogens is big business, which Future Markets forecasts will reach $11 billion by 2027. A big reason is the rise in healthcare-associated infections. According to the CDC 1 in 31 patients contract one when they stay in a hospital. Healthcare facilities potentially have many surfaces where REPELWRAP™ film could be applied.

Drug-resistant infections are a leading cause of death across the globe, costing billions of dollars and untold pain and suffering. FendX wants to protect the things humans come into contact with by slowing the spread of bacteria and viruses — and they believe REPELWRAP™ film may be part of the solution.
