The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The selection of Mahomes has helped the team win their first Super Bowl in 50 years and rank among the best teams in the league over the last five seasons.
Here are five things you might not know about NFL superstar and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Sports Team Owner: Mahomes is a co-owner of several professional sports teams, including several in Kansas City. The newest team added to the portfolio was in January 2023 with Mahomes announced as an investor in the Kansas City Current, a women’s soccer team in the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League). Mahomes’ wife Brittany was already a co-owner of the team prior to his investment.
“I am thankful for the chance to join my wife as part of the Kansas City Current’s ownership team,” Mahomes said. “I am excited to join another championship-caliber club as it continues to make history.”
Mahomes is also part owner of the Kansas City Royals MLB team and Sporting Kansas City, a Major League Soccer team. Mahomes shared in a 2021 interview that owning pieces of sports teams could help prepare him for life after the NFL.
“I want to play for a long time, but you can’t play forever but I always want to be involved in sports in some way.”
Mahomes was also among the celebrities linked to investing in teams in the sport of Pickleball.

Real Estate Investments: A story from the NY Post highlights that Mahomes has started acquiring a portfolio of real estate that includes two homes in Missouri, vacant land in Missouri, and a mansion in the state of Texas. Mahomes bought his first home in Kansas City in 2017 according to the report, with a price tag of $350,000.
Mahomes also owns a home in Kansas City purchased for $1.8 million, where he lives during the NFL season. In 2020, Mahomes acquired an eight-acre plot in Belton, Missouri, about 1.5 hours away from Kansas City, for an estimated $400,000. Mahomes added a house to the land in 2021.
Mahomes' main house is located in Westlake, Texas, and was purchased for $3.37 million, lower than the $4.26 million asking price. The home features four bedrooms and seven bathrooms and was built in 2014.
Endorsements: Along with being one of the highest-paid NFL players, Mahomes makes millions each year from his numerous endorsement deals. The star quarterback was vocal about his love of ketchup during his early years in the league, which prompted Hunt’s Ketchup to sign him to a deal. Hunt’s is owned by ConAgra Brands CAG.
Mahomes also has endorsements with Procter & Gamble’s PG Head & Shoulders, Adidas AG ADDYY, Oakley and State Farm Insurance. BioSteel Sports has an endorsement deal with Mahomes, and the quarterback is also an investor in the company.
MLB Draft Pick: Not every NFL player can say that they were selected in the NFL Draft and also the MLB Draft. Mahomes was selected 10th overall by the Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft, and was also selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2014 MLB Draft. The Tigers selected 19-year-old Mahomes in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft, despite the dual-sport athlete already planning on going to Texas Tech University to play football.
Mahomes was a pitcher out of Texas who could throw in the 90-mile-per-hour range, which drew the attention of baseball teams. It also helped that Mahomes is the son of Patrick Mahomes Sr, who played 11 seasons in MLB.
“I’m a baseball player at heart,” Mahomes once said. “That’s just who I am. I’m playing shortstop back there.”
Those who watch football have seen Mahomes complete sidearm throws and no-look passes frequently, and it could be his history playing baseball that makes these throws look natural for the NFL quarterback.
Breaking Records Early: Despite only being in the NFL for six seasons, Mahomes is already breaking league records and could be on his way to an NFL Hall of Fame-worthy career. Mahomes is only the second quarterback in NFL history to have multiple 5,000-yard passing and 40-touchdown seasons.
In the 2022 season, Mahomes had 41 touchdowns and 5,250 passing yards, which helped him break the NFL record for a single season total yards (5,614). Mahomes won his second league MVP in the 2022 season, winning 48 of the 50 first-place votes and collecting 490 out of a possible 500 points.
With the 2022 NFL MVP win, Mahomes became only the 10th player in the league to win the MVP trophy twice and the third fastest to win two MVPs. Mahomes has broken several single-season records and is on pace to break more. Mahomes ranks first in many categories when looking at the first 75 games played by a quarterback.
