Mark Zuckerberg, the mastermind behind Meta, is not just a tech mogul but also a passionate hobbyist. He credits his side projects with teaching him more than his college courses ever did, emphasizing their role in skill development and innovation. In a 2017 town hall event, Zuckerberg highlighted how hobbies can significantly enhance one's professional profile.
Here are five budget-friendly hobbies of Zuckerberg that anyone can try.
1. Mixed Martial Arts Training
Mark Zuckerberg has taken his passion for mixed martial arts (MMA) to the next level by training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA. His commitment is so intense that it even led to a torn ACL during training, sparking a warning to investors about potential impacts on his business responsibilities. Despite the risks, Zuckerberg has trained with notable MMA figures like Volkanovski and Israel Adesanya, earning a blue belt along the way.
2. Raising Cattle
Zuckerberg’s ventures extend into agriculture, where he’s raising cattle on Ko’olau Ranch in Kauai, Hawaii. His aim? To produce “the highest quality beef in the world” with cattle fed on a diet of macadamia meal and beer. This project is a family affair, with his daughters helping to plant macadamia trees and care for the animals, making it Zuckerberg’s “most delicious” project yet.
3. Katana Making
During a tour in Asia, Zuckerberg embraced the art of Katana making. He spent time with Japanese sword master Akhira Kokaji, forging a Katana and even slicing a bamboo beam. His fascination with this traditional Japanese sword highlights his interest in both craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
4. Smoking Meat
In 2016, Mark Zuckerberg became a meme following a 32-minute Facebook livestream in which he frequently expressed his enthusiasm for using his smoker. “Probably, if I had to go with a favorite, I think it’s gotta be ‘smoking meats,'” he said. “I do love grilling and cooking, and that was silly, and I appreciate that everyone enjoys it.”
5. Surfing
On the Fourth of July 2021, Zuckerberg took to hydrofoiling, a modern twist on surfing where a hydrofoil lifts the board above the water. He’s become one of the most visible figures in this emerging sport, which uses a wing-like structure under the water for lift. Zuckerberg’s hydrofoil adventures show that he’s not just about tech and business. He’s also keen to ride the waves of innovation in watersports.
