The XRP Token XRP/USD from Ripple continues to post gains in recent weeks thanks to optimism for a new stablecoin.

Six years ago, the XRP Token was part of a fundraising effort by musician Madonna. Here's a look back at the event and how much investors could have made investing alongside the effort.

What Happened: The price of XRP has soared in 2024 thanks to filings for XRP ETFs, a stablecoin launch and optimism that a new White House administration could help the company in its pending SEC lawsuit.

While XRP has had a great 2024, the cryptocurrency hit an all-time high of $3.84 in early 2018, a level it has failed to recapture over the last six years. In 2018, XRP was highlighted by actor and tech investor Ashton Kutcher, who made a surprise appearance on "The Ellen Show" to announce a donation to Ellen DeGeneres' charity.

Another charity event helped by Ripple was a birthday fundraiser for musician Madonna, which took place from July 30, 2018 through Aug. 31, 2018.

The musician sought to celebrate her 60^th birthday by raising funds for Raising Malawi, a non-profit she co-founded in 2006. The organization helps support the Home of Hope orphanage in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, as reported by Coindesk.

Ripple matched donations in the effort and over $1 million was raised for Madonna's birthday.

"Every dollar donated to my birthday fundraiser for Home of Hope will be matched by Ripple. Thank you Ripple for doubling our impact! Let's Raise Malawi, let's Raise Home of Hope! Let's show these beautiful children that we care," Madonna said in a tweet at the time.

Madonna's manager Guy Oseary invested in Ripple in 2018 with business partner Kutcher. Madonna highlighted the company's effort in a short video attached to the tweet.

"Ripple is on a mission to make money more accessible to people all around the world," Madonna said.

The singer said international payments can be expensive and Ripple wanted to help make a difference.

Investing $1,000 in XRP: The XRP Token traded at a high of $0.4545 on July 30, 2018, the first date of the fundraiser effort by Madonna.

A $1,000 investment at the time could have purchased 2,200.22 XRP based on the day's high price.

The $1,000 investment would be worth $5,874.59 today based on a price of $2.67 for XRP at the time of writing. This represents a potential return of 487.5% over the last six-plus years.

Madonna’s fundraiser brought increased attention to Ripple and the XRP Token, which may have been the first time some investors learned of the cryptocurrency or considered an investment.

While XRP is up over 300% year-to-date in 2024, Benzinga readers predict positive things ahead in 2025.
