DC Video Games Sets Stage For Skyrocketing Profits Through Cinematic Universe Collaboration

By Enrique D. Fernández

The success of movies based on DC and Marvel's biggest superheroes continues to reshape the way of doing business and now promises to change the course of the pop culture economy for good.

The superhero cinematic universe is not standing still. The comic book adaptations phenomenon is going for more, and both Disney DIS's Marvel and Warner Bros. WBD’s DC are always looking for new ways to reinvent themselves.

After the closing of the first stage of the MCU, it was the turn of Disney+ 's television series, which are linked directly to the stories on the big screen.

These created a whole new scenario for the business of superheroes, which widened the pop culture landscape. James Gunn decided to climb the business ladder when the pandemic forced millions of moviegoers to stay safe at home and reinvent the way to be entertained.

In recent news, the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the new “Suicide Squad” sequel has just announced his next strategy as co-Chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios. So, what's next? The stories of the label's upcoming video games will be linked to the events that'll take place in the franchise's future films.

Gunn confirmed the news on his official Twitter account when a fan asked whether there was a possibility to link the movies that currently dominate the box office with the world of video games. The creator answered with a blunt "Yes."

On the opposite street, Marvel's directors commented they are not adopting the same business strategy. Bill Rosemann, VP of Marvel, confirmed months ago that none of Marvel's video games are connected to these stories, which also has an impact on the company's upcoming titles.

"We have all these different realities. Now they're all real, and we want to give everyone the freedom to tell their story. We don't want to say 'you can't blow up the moon, because this game over here by another studio needs the moon.' We want to give everyone the freedom and the clear lane to tell their story," said Rosemann.

The new creative duo between Gunn and producer Peter Safran could shake up the game release schedule for the coming months. It's known that "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" was delayed during its pre-production stage so, for some, it could be the first of many video games that will bring us a story linked to future film releases.

Gamers will take over the group of villains who will have the impossible mission of getting rid of the League of Justice after being co-opted by the evil Brainiac. Rocksteady Studios is the developer in charge of the production and so far they have only confirmed that the game would be part of Arkham universe only, which includes "Arkham Asylum," "Arkham City," "Arkham Knight" and "Arkham Origins."

The next DC movie, "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," promises several surprises in a saga that has been trying to expand the family of characters for several years now, as Kevin Feige did from the beginning at the front of MCU.

The most recent release of DC, "Black Adam," grossed $377.7 million so far, while "Gotham Knights" became the second best-selling game during its first week of release in the United Kingdom. In Japan, the PlayStation 5 SONY version sold a total of 3,125 physical copies during the first few days, making it one of the country's best sellers.

The sum of these profits translates into a multi-million dollar business for Gunn and DC, opening the door to new possibilities for everyone involved in the film and video game industry.
