- Salesforce laid off thousands of employees, yet is paying actor Matthew McConaughey $10M a year.
Salesforce Inc CRM reported earnings Wednesday after the close, and beat expectations on revenue, EPS and gave strong guidance.
It was also reported that the San Francisco-based company is paying actor Matthew McConaughey upwards of $10 million a year to serve as a “creative adviser and TV pitchman.”
This wasn't a good look for the Marc Benioff-led Salesforce, but the stock is trading up more than 16% pre-market on Thursday as investors get excited about the strong guidance given on Thursday.

McConaughey has starred in the firm's commercials, including the Salesforce Super Bowl ad in which he rode in a hot-air balloon in an astronaut suit, and was involved in high-level strategy discussions at the company regarding messaging and marketing.
Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas fame is also reportedly advising Salesforce. He also used to be on Intel Corporation’s INTC payroll as an advisor.
Despite Salesforce’s strong report and subsequent price action, it’s easy to understand why observers were quick to criticize Salesforce’s decision to pay McConaughey such a hefty fee while the company has laid off thousands of employees. Investors seem to be less worried about the company’s capital discipline, and more focused on the growth opportunity going forward.
