Trump's Reality Collides With New Joker Movie. It's New York, Not Gotham. Where's Batman?

Zinger Key Points
  • Donald Trump could be arrested any day, with a courthouse in New York playing a central role in the case against the former president.
  • The courthouse could also be featured in one of the most anticipated movies.

Former president Donald Trump has indicated that he could be arrested at any time over hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels — and the arrest could be featured in the new "Joker" sequel, according to a new report.

What Happened: As Trump nears a potential arrest connected to his lawyer Michael Cohen's $130,000 payment to Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election, the former president is considering smiling as he’s paraded in front of the media.

Another character who could be smiling in the exact same location as Trump is actor Joaquin Phoenix, who played the title character in the 2019 smash hit “Joker.”

A scene for the upcoming sequel to “Joker” titled “Joker: Folie a Deux” is set to be filmed outside the Manhattan Criminal Court, where the Trump hush money case will take place.

The movie production team could possibly take advantage of the media circus outside the courthouse, according to the New York Post.

Members of the media and potential protestors have been eyeing the location ahead of a potential Trump announcement.

A report from NBC News says the film shoot for “Joker: Folie a Deux” will include 700 fake protestors, fake explosions and a potential appearance by Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn in the highly anticipated sequel.

The report says a movie crew was seen with equipment and a trailer near the courthouse. A sign indicating a closed movie shoot says filming will take place on Saturday, March 25, and Sunday, March 26, beginning at 6 a.m. ET.

The film shoot is listed as “Juliet,” a name that has been linked to the "Joker" sequel. The first movie was listed as “Romeo” when its film scenes were shot throughout the city.

Why It’s Important: The Manhattan Criminal Court has been used in movies and television before. The timing of the film shoot and its relation to the case against the former president could increase anticipation for the movie and add to the already huge media attention the Trump case has gotten.

“Joker: Folie a Deux” will be released by Warner Bros. Discovery WBD and follows the success of the 2019 movie.

Todd Phillips returns to direct and Phoenix is set to reprise his role as the title character. As previously mentioned, actress and singer Lady Gaga joins the cast of the sequel, which is said to resemble a musical more than a typical drama.

“Joker” grossed $335.5 million domestically and $1.07 billion worldwide. The movie was the ninth-highest grossing movie domestically and sixth-highest worldwide in 2019.

“Joker: Folie a Deux” is set for a theatrical release on Oct. 4, 2024.
