What Fuels Putin? Diet Habits Show Fish Preference To Meat, Vodka Shots, Horseradish Cocktails — And These Unique Foods

Zinger Key Points
  • Putin prefers fish or lamb to other meats.
  • The Russian President drinks a mixture of beetroot and horseradish

Russian President Vladimir Putin craves more than just a reunification of the former Soviet Union. He has a preference for several cuisines while at home and abroad, although the former KGB officer hasn’t traveled much internationally since illegally invading Ukraine 13 months ago.

His brutality is fueled not only by a lust for imperialism but a diet of porridge, quail eggs and cottage cheese served with honey, according to the state-backed publication Russia Beyond.

For breakfast, Putin is reported to enjoy beetroot and horseradish cocktails. Horseradish, which is rich in antioxidants and reduces inflammation, according to WebMD, may help the Russian leader heal after shirtless horse-riding, a hobby which Putin was mocked for at the G7 summit last year.

Putin’s Appetite: While Putin isn’t a fan of government officials hanging pasta over their ears to mock him, he has been known to enjoy chicken noodle soup.

Putin prefers fish to meat, although he likes lamb. The Russian president may have acquired the preference for fish and lamb from his late grandfather, Spiridon Putin, who cooked for the former head of government Vladimir Lenin, according to the outlet. Spiridon Putin cooked a dish of soup and lamb with Caucasian herbs that his grandson was able to try before his grandfather’s death.

In a 2022 book about the president, entitled "Putin’s Family" by Alexander Putin, it’s written Putin likes various pies for dinner, which is a taste he may have developed from his mother who baked pies filled with savory items such as cabbage, rice and meat.

To wash his meals down, although Putin often skips meals because he's too busy to eat, the Russian president enjoys wine and beer, and will sometimes have a shot of vodka as an aperitif.
