The Marvels Trailer Is Here: See Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel And Monica Rambeau Go Intergalactic

Zinger Key Points
  • A new trailer for "The Marvels" was released Tuesday.
  • The movie will see three female superheroes team up and could be among the most anticipated movies of 2023.

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, that's part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, arrives in November 2023. A new trailer is trending on Tuesday, with Marvel fans analyzing what the story could center on and what it means for other movies and series.

What Happened: Marvel was acquired by The Walt Disney Company DIS in 2009 as one of the biggest acquisitions by the media giant at the time.

Since the purchase, Disney has utilized the Marvel franchise as one of its keys to box office success and original programming for its Disney+ streaming platform.

A new movie will combine several elements of the Marvel franchise of both streaming and movies and could act as a catalyst for Disney shares.

Disney unveiled the first teaser trailer for “The Marvels,” a movie set for a Nov. 10 theatrical release. The movie features a trio of female superheroes, as Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau team up.

“Teaming up changes everyone,” a tagline reads with the word everyone replacing everything, which has been crossed out.

“The Marvels” sees Brie Larson returning to reprise her role from the 2019 hit movie “Captain Marvel.” Ms. Marvel was featured in a Disney+ series of the same name, which had six episodes in 2022. Monica Rambeau was featured in the “WandaVision” series, also on Disney+.

The events of the movie are expected to take place after the “Ms. Marvel” series, according to Variety.

“Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe,” a synopsis reads.

Director Nia DaCosta makes her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut and is the first Black woman and fourth woman to direct a film in the successful movie franchise universe. DaCosta also co-wrote the screenplay.

Why It’s Important: The new movie is one of many that were announced by Disney as part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new phase includes several theatrical releases and original series on Disney+.

The movie was originally slated to have a July 2023 release but was pushed back to the new November date. The new date could keep “The Marvels” from losing its momentum during a highly competitive summer 2023 release window and also allow the other big upcoming Marvel movie “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” to have more breathing room for extended success at the box office.

“Captain Marvel” grossed $426.8 million domestically and $704.6 million internationally to hit a worldwide total of $1.13 billion. The movie ranked as the fifth highest-grossing movie domestically in 2019, trailing only other Disney movies.

The movie ranks as the eighth-highest-grossing Marvel movie domestically and has one of the five highest-grossing totals of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies since 2018.

“Captain Marvel” ranks 29th all-time domestically and 30th all-time worldwide for theatrical box office.

The trailer has over 3.8 million views on YouTube in its first five hours since premiering. After the trailer was released, terms like The Marvels, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel were all trending on Twitter. The trailer featured the song “Intergalactic” by the Beastie Boys, which also saw the band and song title trending.

Disney has a 2023 movie lineup that includes the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, “The Marvels,” Little Mermaid, a new Indiana Jones movie, “Haunted Mansion” and the new Pixar movie “Elemental.”

With the strong slate of movies, Disney should dominate the box office and could see shares get a lift. There are also numerous Marvel series premiering or returning on Disney+ in 2023, which could help boost streaming subscribers.
