Amazon's Jeff Bezos Commands A Room With A Unique Style Of Confidence, Which Makes Him Likeable

Zinger Key Points
  • Social confidence pertains to social skills and emotional intelligence.
  • “People who are right a lot change their minds often,” Bezos once said.

Amazon founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos is the third-wealthiest person in the world, but the multi-billionaire's humble upbringing provided him with a richness of virtues, which contributed to Bezos’ ability to not only succeed but triumph.

One of the qualities Bezos possesses is social confidence, which inspires those around him and makes the e-commerce mogul a great leader, according to CNBC.

What Is Social Confidence?

In contrast to epistemic confidence, meaning having sureness or conclusiveness, social confidence refers to one’s self-belief and conviction in their own ability to overcome life’s challenges and achieve success.

So, where a person with a high level of epistemic confidence may assert that their opinion or belief is accurate, a person with social confidence takes command of a room and draws people in by exuding self-assuredness while being able to express uncertainty, according to the outlet.

Moreover, epistemic confidence pertains to knowledge and cognitive abilities, whereas social confidence pertains to social skills and emotional intelligence. And, while epistemic and social confidence can exist together, “some of the most successful — and likable — people have more of the latter,” said CNBC.

How Bezos Demonstrates Social Confidence

Co-founder of Basecamp, Jason Fried, described in a 2012 blog post how Bezos once answered a question during a Q&A session. “People who are right a lot change their minds often,” Bezos reportedly said. The statement made clear that Bezos believes that being receptive to new information and perspectives is an important part of growing and improving.

Bezos also projects a positive and self-assured image to others, which led to his big break in 1996 when venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins kickstarted Amazon to grow from a small online bookstore to the mega e-commerce and streaming giant it is today. A partner at the Silicon Valley firm, John Doerr, recounted when he first met Bezos and decided to invest in his start-up online shop, saying “I walked into the door and this guy with a boisterous laugh who was just exuding energy comes bounding down the steps. In that moment, I wanted to be in business with Jeff,” according to CNBC.
