Elon Musk, billionaire tech mogul and owner of what we once knew as Twitter, said on Friday that he plans to eliminate a safety feature on the platform now known as X.
What Happened: Musk said that X’s users will no longer have the ability to block unwanted comments from followers, with the exception to the rule being direct messages.
“Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs,” Musk posted, adding that the block function “makes no sense” given the continuing availability of the mute feature.
Historically, the block function served as a virtual stop sign against content users don't want to see and harassment, as well as a method for users to curate their feeds. Its removal might force users to settle for the mute feature, which only hides unwanted content from their view but not from their followers.
Jack Dorsey, Twitter's original founder and co-creator agreed with Musk, saying, "💯. mute only."
Other users don't agree. Comments such as, "This is a terrible idea," and "Block is one of the best features on X," were posted under Musk’s announcement.
While the decision might be divisive, it may fit within the larger context of Musk’s vision for the platform. Musk’s explanation for rebranding Twitter as X emphasizes its evolution from a platform mimicking the succinct chirps of birds to a “super app” capable of hosting diverse content.
