How This Nanny Brings In Nearly $200 An Hour, Could Work Just '2 Months A Year'

Zinger Key Points
  • Glorida Richards is an actress that also nannies for the ultra-wealthy
  • Richards gets perks such as traveling in private jets.

Usually, when people talk about side hustles, they’re talking about picking up some shifts as an Uber driver or flipping some goods on eBay.

Gloria Richards, 34, has a much more interesting — and lucrative — side hustle: as a nanny for children of the ultra-wealthy, as described in a recent CNBC Make It profile.

Richards is an actress in off-broadway plays in New York City, but in order to bring in more money Richards began helping extremely wealthy families take care of their kids.

“I could nanny for, like, two months at the top of the year, and I’d be fine for the rest of the year,” Richards told CNBC Make It. “What feeds me is being able to work so closely with these kids.”

As you can imagine, being a nanny for a billionaire family looks quite different than what your typical role would look like. Instead of preparing food or playing games with the children, Richards spends a large portion of her job coordinating kids’ schedules that are filled with various social activities, sports, tutors and more.

Richards earns as much as $2,000 per day working with some families and enjoys other job perks such as getting to travel in private jets and yachts.

But, the job isn’t all champagne and caviar.

One drawback to the job, Richards says, is the fact she works with a lot of kids whose parents are absent and it can get emotionally exhausting.

So, if Richards brought in $1,500 a day, which is a conservative estimate for her 12- to 15-hour days, that means she could work just 50 days and earn around $75,000 pre-tax. That might not be enough to live comfortably in some parts of New York City, but for just a few weeks of work, that’s not bad.
