  • Much of his fortunes came from touring and recording for over five decades.

Celebrity singer, songwriter and businessman Jimmy Buffett breathed his last Friday night at the age of 76. A look back at his life reveals his multi-faceted personality and versatility.

Man With Midas Touch: The “Margaritaville” singer enthralled his fan base with his soft rock style of singing. More importantly, he found much success leveraging his professional success to build up a billion-dollar business empire of restaurants, resorts and frozen concoctions. His foray into the world of business started in 1985 when he teamed up with his friend Donna "Sunshine" Smith to open the first Margaritaville T-shirt shop in Key West, Florida.

Buffett's holding company Margaritaville is a hospitality company that manages and franchises a casual-dining U.S. restaurant chain, retail stores selling Jimmy Buffett-themed merchandise and hotels.

Buffett was added to the Forbes' billionaires list in April, thanks to earnings stemming not only from ticket sales from nationwide stadium tours and his music catalog but also from his multiple businesses.

At the time of his death, Buffett's net worth was estimated to be roughly $1 billion, earning him the distinction of being the 2,543rd richest person, Forbes noted. His 28% stake in Margarita Holdings is valued at about $180 million, and he has assets worth $570 million as a result of spending more than five decades touring and recording, it added.

Buffett’s other assets included private planes and homes, valued at $140 million.

Buffett Vs. Buffett: Jimmy Buffett owned shares of Berkshire Hathaway, which is led by investment icon Warren Buffett, a Forbes report pointed out in early April. Despite sharing the same last name, they are not related.

Warren Buffett was a great admirer of Jimmy Buffett and reportedly told Forbes how he wished there were more Jimmy Buffetts.

“Tell Jimmy to keep me in his will!” Warren Buffett reportedly said.
