Taylor Swift's Songs Inspire Life Sentence Inmate's Path To Parole: 'I Still See Myself In Them'

An incarcerated man credited Taylor Swift‘s music for aiding him during his prison sentence. Convicted murderer, Joe Garcia, 53, shared his experiences in a heartfelt essay published in The New Yorker.

“I wonder whether I would have reacted to the words ‘I'm the problem, it's me.’ Hers must be champagne problems compared with mine, but I still see myself in them,” he wrote.

Garcia first learned about Swift’s music in 2009 while in jail. He was later transferred to a lower-security facility in 2013, where he became acquainted with Swift’s songs through a pocket radio.

He found solace in the tracks from “Red,” Swift’s fourth studio album.

“There was, in her voice, something intuitively pleasant and genuine and good, something that implies happiness or at least the possibility of happiness,” Garcia penned in his essay.

Over the years, he maintained his interest in Swift’s music, identifying with songs on the albums “1989,” “Lover,” and “Midnights,” resonating with different songs.

As Garcia prepares to face a parole board in the near future, he noted that Swift’s music provoked him to contemplate questions about himself.
