Taylor Swift Concert Film Smashes More Records, Here's Where The Movie Ranks For All Films In 2023

Zinger Key Points
  • The concert film from Taylor Swift has broken several domestic box office records.
  • A look at where the movie ranks in 2023 and what's next.

The 2023 year just keeps getting bigger and bigger for musician Taylor Swift. The musician is continuing to take the movie box office by storm alongside a record-breaking concert tour.

What Happened: Following a strong opening box office weekend after its debut on Oct. 13, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film won the domestic box office for a second straight weekend.

The concert film had a domestic box office of $31 million in its second weekend, adding to the $95 million opening weekend, as reported by Variety.

With another number one position atop the box office, the Swift film became the first ever concert film to top the domestic box office for more than one weekend.

The film beat the highly anticipated opening weekend of the Martin Scorsese directed “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which comes from Apple Inc AAPL. The newly released movie grossed $23 million domestically and $21 million internationally for a total of $44 million.

“The Eras Tour” concert film now has a total box office of $129.8 million domestically, $30.7 million internationally and $160.5 million worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

In its opening weekend, the film had the second-best domestic opening for the month of October, trailing only “Joker.”

The film, which only plays in theaters Thursday through Sunday each week, trails only the Michael Jackson concert film “This Is It” for the worldwide record. That film, released in 2009, grossed $72.1 million domestic and $261.2 million worldwide.

Domestically, the Swift film is moving up the 2023 chart and currently ranks 18th for box office performance in the year.

While the movie is a long way from hits like “Barbie” and “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the film continues to pass other 2023 films and could make its way into the top 10 before it leaves theaters. To hit the top 10, the movie would have to hit a domestic gross of $185 million, which seems doable at this time.

The film has grossed more domestically than other films like “Haunted Mansion” and “Blue Beetle.”

The film is part of an exclusive deal between Swift and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc AMC that will see the movie play exclusively in theaters for 13 weeks.

What’s Next: AMC could stand to benefit from the film’s successful theatrical run. The company is set to report third-quarter results on Nov. 8. While those results won’t include the box office impact of the Swift film, AMC could share an update or provide fourth-quarter guidance that includes the strength of the concert film.

The other big winner going forward could be the company that gains streaming rights to the film once it leaves theaters. There are likely several interested parties and several streaming companies have past relationships with Swift, including Apple, Walt Disney Co. DIS, Netflix Inc NFLX and Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN.

A report from Fast Company highlights that while she had past relationships with each of the four companies, Swift has also spoken out in recent years on both Netflix and Apple, which could hurt their relationship.

Disney might have the front-running spot thanks to a couple of items and the past relationship. Swift is set to make her directorial debut in the future with a movie that will be released by Searchlight Pictures, a unit of Disney.

There are also rumors that Swift could make a cameo appearance in the upcoming “Deadpool 3” movie, which comes from Disney.
