At a recent Silicon Valley event, Canadian musician and visual artist Grimes publicly disagreed with the ideology of the attending Artificial Intelligence (AI) enthusiasts before proceeding to DJ for them.
What Happened: Grimes was the DJ at the gathering, which was aligned with the philosophy of “effective accelerationism” (e/acc), Business Insider reported. The party followed OpenAI’s developer conference on Monday and was sponsored by e/acc and several other small tech organizations.
The e/acc philosophy promotes rapid technological advancement, especially in AI, and has been endorsed by influential tech figures such as Marc Andreessen. During the event, Grimes, also known as Claire Boucher, expressed her disagreement with the party's sentiment.
Quoted by The San Francisco Standard, Grimes claimed, “I think we need to find ways to be safer about AI.”
Despite her views, Grimes continued to entertain the attendees with her DJ set. She later reiterated her stance on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “To be clear, I deeply disagree with the thesis of this party haha but I am dj-ing in enemy territory because I think healthy discourse is constructive!”
Why It Matters: Grimes has previously expressed support for AI and openness in art, even offering to share royalties for AI-generated songs using her voice. Her views on AI regulation align with those of Elon Musk, father of her three children, who earlier this year called for a pause on AI system training.
