Michelle Obama Makes History, Clinches Second Grammy With 'The Light We Carry'

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has clinched her second Grammy Award, triumphing over notable figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and actress Meryl Streep.

What Happened: As reported by The Hill, the ex-first lady was awarded a Grammy on Sunday during the preshow for her audiobook of “The Light We Carry,” a self-help-style memoir released in 2022. The award was in the Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording category.

The category also included actor William Shatner and music producer Rick Rubin. This is Obama’s second Grammy, her first being in the Spoken Word Album category for narrating her 2020 bestseller, “Becoming.”

With this latest win, Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama now share the same number of Grammy wins. The former president secured awards in the Best Spoken Word Album category in 2006 and 2008.

Why It Matters: The 66th Annual Grammy Awards has been an eventful one. Taylor Swift announced the release date of her new album after bagging the Album of the Year award. At the same time, Jay-Z criticized the organizers for not recognizing his wife, Beyoncé, with the Album of the Year award.

As for Michelle Obama, the latest Grammy after she landed an Emmy nomination in 2023 as a producer for the same which aired on Netflix, featuring Oprah Winfrey.

In the same year, the Obamas produced a film called “Leave the World Behind,” which topped Netflix’s global charts.
